David DeBatto has just signed an agreement with Praeger Security International or PSI (an imprint of Greenwood Publishing Group) to write a Memoir of his tour in Iraq as a Tactical HUMINT Team leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As always, Dave will pull no punches as he tells the good, the bad and the ugly about our nation's military HUMINT performance in Iraq during the the war and especially in the early occupation - when we lost the war we had just won. PSI focuses on international security, terrorism and military strategy and is one of the world's largest publishers of reference works as well as academic and general interest books. Dave's new book, Counter to Intelligence: Memoir of a U.S. Army Counterintelligence Agent in Iraq, will be published in hardcover and is due to hit stores in the spring of 2009.

"24/7 blood-boiling action from beginning to end. I'm a mega-fan of the genre, have read about everything there is out there, and this is—no doubt about it—one of the best. Agent David DeLuca and Team Red are unrivaled in fresh, creative ways to get results. Big Dig go boom? It out-24's 24!!! Bravo." —Mr. Bookwrench, Amazon.com

"Go behind the scenes of a counterinsurgency", Mark Steele (PA, USA)
Painstaking intelligence based upon the development of a network of reliable sources is the key to any counterinsurgency effort and Debatto has "been there and done that" in Iraq. Sometimes fiction is the best way to present truth and this book drives home truths about the intelligence war in Iraq: how intelligence can and should be gathered, how mutual trust with locals is the only way to develop reliable information, and how success often walks a fine line between traditional police skills and traditional military skills. For a shorter "factual" version of what the CI guys are up to read the Wall Street Journal article by Greg Jaffe called "Intelligence Test" dated 10SEP04. Debatto's book is fiction but it rings true. I'm looking forward to his next title, CI: Dark Target.

"Close to the real thing" Craig Bachler (FL, USA)
A must for Summer reading! For fiction, this is close to the real thing. Sgt David Deluca shows that there is another side to war, intelligence gathering. This is the most important aspect of finding an enemy that is well hidden.
5 Stars, a must read this summer.

"Did the Russians weaponize smallpox? If so, where is it?" Lupo (USA)
If you enjoy Crichton or Clancy you will like this book. I found the story captivating, with several twists. It will make a good movie. Sure, the characters are typical for this genre. They are a stylized, tough, extra-ordinarily competent, and very lucky group. The underlying plot relates to a bioterror threat against the US. Seriously, if something like this hasn't happened already, it will. While I'm sure my present job providing medical support to our troops in Iraq has influenced my perspective, if you're reading this, read the book.

"Solid Thriller" Harriet Klausner (USA)
After he lost his sister on 9/11, Boston Police Officer Dave DeLuca reenlisted in the army and went to Iraq as a counter intelligence officer where his performance was deemed excellent. After returning with his team to the states, Dave received a promotion to Chief Warrant Officer 2 and leader of "Team Red, a special operations counterintelligence unit. His first assignment is to find Cheryl Escavedo who while working at the underground base in Cheyenne Mountain allegedly stole classified material.

The search leads to the Arizona Desert where Dave and a tribal policeman track Cheryl's footprints until they suddenly end near a sheet of glass-like material. Realizing that he has not been given the whole story he demands his superior officer tell him what is really going on and learns that she probably stole information on Darkstar, a top secret star wars type weapon that mustn't fall into enemy hands. The clues take the team from a cult that believes that a UFO is coming to Mexican drug lords and Cheryl's roommate. Deluca feels that it isn't the woman he's really after; that proves right because someone has taken control of Darkstar and is using it for his purposes that run counter to what it was originally designed for.

C.I. DARK TARGET is a novel that has plenty of action, excitement and James Bond type adventures. The authors clearly prove the point that without accountability the political-military-industrial complex can do what it wants without the public being the wiser. It also means that when things go wrong, the people who work in the shadows are called upon to fix things up or die trying. Readers will look for more capers starring the protagonist and his Team Red.

"CI:Team Red, is a tribute to the quiet professionals who are thrust into deadly and extraordinary circumstances. Buy it, Read it, Pass it on, then thank the next counterintelligence agent you see!"
